Very simply put, a Car Free Day encourages motorists to give up their car for a day. Organized events are held across the globe on September 22 to celebrate the World Car Free Day. These events promote improvement of mass transit, cycling, walking and car pooling, and the development of communities where jobs are closer to home and where shopping is within walking distance.

The nature and scale of such events vary by location but the main objective never changes which is to give motorists and commuterists an idea of their locality with fewer cars.
